General Observation
A symbol of Metropolis beauty, and the national icon of The Metropolis. Aristrocrats will paint eyes onto the shimmering feathers of the Featherbeau. Though its high maintence and difficulty cultivating makes this bird rare to keep, only for the wealthiest estates.
Entry I
The Featherbeau is a well-documented, domesticated species. Developed by wealthy breeders in the Spire Curtain, they were selectively bred by pairing native pheasants, matching pairs for their plumage and elegant shapes. Later generations introduced more variety in their colors, but breeders have always selected for their signature, tremendous tail plumage, something which does not naturally occur in the animal. They are not found in the wild, and do not survive escaping captivity.
By the middle of the Unity Age, Featherbeau were an expensive status symbol, seen in the gardens or salons of upper-Metropolis aristocracy. Its plumage was bred to resemble several of the uniquely magic touched citizens in the Metropolis, and exists as a token of cultural pride for the otherwise infant Borough. Owners have taken to painting their plumage with eyes; the national Metropolis symbol.
The large plumage is rumored to have come from wild stock imported from the local Wastes, but all Featherbeau in the Curtain descend from a single breeding pair; the so-called “Twin Emperors.” Because of this, it harbors a remarkable wealth of health issues.
Despite constant efforts from breeders, the gene for its desirable tail plumage is highly unstable. Breeding often results in a 1:6 ratio, with most chicks hatching either without tail plumage, or remarkably dull and ugly in color. As a result, a beautiful, full-plumed Featherbeau is an exceedingly expensive commodity.
When exposed to certain mixtures of harkestone, the mutation is known to increase, but these birds instead develop malformed limbs or tumors. The Metropolis aristocrats continually import new stock and fund research to improve the bloodlines, but no strain lasts more than a generation or two before reverting.
