Entry I
The Northern Velvenox was discovered during the Second Age, but urban encroachment and over-hunting have strained its populations. Early Luna settlements regarded it as a pest, due to its habit of breaking into secured enclosures and feasting on livestock, or stealing preserved meats.
Thus, efforts at eradicating the Northern Velvenox date back several hundred years, championed by a tradition called “The Hunt,” in which Luna hunters would gather Enzoi, and unleash the hounds upon any sighted Velvenox. Velvenox populations suffered, and their numbers significantly dwindled. This practice was banned following ecological consequences and a change in the public perception of the Velvenox.
Recently, breeding programs for Velvenox have cropped up, despite their negative reputation. This change is in tandem with the Luna Borough’s push for cultural distinction and continued sociopolitical identity, especially following the perceived exportation and appropriation of the Enzoi breed.
Propaganda posters began depicting the Velvenox as an emblem of resilience and adaptability, sporting traits which are uniquely and proudly Luna. In some ways, Luna has portrayed the Velvenox as an example of its own people, strong and present against all odds. Other Boroughs find this laughable and delusional.
Luna officials signed off on dedicating resources to breeding programs, capturing kits, and distributing care manuals to the public.
While not yet officially domesticated, the programs have made remarkable progress on breeding for temperament and desirability. Luna now exports Velvenox for use as magical companions.
