The Butterfly Gene is an overcoat gene.

The design of this gene greatly resembles the patterning of the Monarch butterfly.

Cats with this gene have the appearance of butterfly wings draped over their backs, and have butterfly-shaped masks on their faces. Beneath the butterfly wings and mask, the gene features a dark stripe along the spine and tail of the cat, dark shoulders, then a lighter underbelly and legs.

With the Butterfly gene, a cat's undercoat is visible on a patch on their lower chest, and on the backs of their legs.
