Cats with this gene have the appearance of butterfly wings draped over their backs, and have butterfly-shaped masks on their faces. Beneath the butterfly wings and mask, the gene features a dark stripe along the spine and tail of the cat, dark shoulders, then a lighter underbelly and legs.
Cats with this gene have a large, heart-shaped marking on their forehead, somewhat resembling a widow's peak. They have smaller heart-shaped eyebrows, and a cascade of more heart-like stripes down their backs and tails. Their paws are also darker, with similar heart-like stripes leading up the lengths of their forelegs.


With the Valentine gene, a cat's [[undercoat]] is visible on their face, neck, chest, and the top halves of their  legs.
