Genes are a main feature of breeding on PawBorough. They affect the appearance of a cat and are applied using 
Metamorphics.
Applying Genes

Genes can be applied to an existing cat using Metamorphics. Metamorphics are applied to a cat through the storage page. Applying new genes to a pair that is nesting will affect the unborn kits so long as the player hasn't selected "Meet your kits".
Gene Inheritance

Kits always inherit the genes of their parents. Genes do not "jump" to other slots. That is to say a gene in Accent 1 will never appear in Accent 2, and vice versa.
Every gene has a rarity which determines the odds of inheritance. Competing genes of similar rarities will each have an even 50% chance to appear. Lower rarity genes are more frequent, while higher rarities are less frequent. Genes that are shared between parents in the same slots will have a 100% chance of passing down.

Gene Types

Genes are separated into three distinct groups:
- **Overcoat**, the primary and predominant pattern of a cat.
- **Undercoat**, a secondary pattern that usually accompanies the overcoat.
- **Accents**, these are the tertiary patterns that adorn the cat. They are further divided into two slots "Accent 1" and "Accent 2".
Overcoat
The predominant pattern on a cats coat. Overcoats typically cover the majority of a cat's body. The color of the overcoat is determined by the cats overcoat color. Some patterns include additional accent colors alongside the base color. Cats have a singular overcoat slot. They are applied with agates, a sub-type of metamorphics. Undercoat
The undercoat is an accompanying pattern that typically covers the underbelly of a cat; it is layered under the overcoat. The visibility of the undercoat is greatly influenced by the overcoat. Some patterns such as solid do not show the overcoat, while others, such as minkface predominantly show the undercoat.
The undercoat has two patterns: Standard and Dilute. Standard undercoats show the hue at normal saturation, while dilute undercoats are dynamic and become lighter if the overcoat is darker than the undercoat color. Cats have a singular undercoat slot. They are applied with either 
Dilute Undercoat Amber or

Accents
Accent genes add extra details to a cat, from small pops of color to additional features that break a cats silhouette. Accent 1 will always layer above Accent 2. The genes of either accent slot can be swapped with the use of a 
Patterncross Quartz. Unlike the overcoat or undercoat, an accent can be removed using a 
Remove Accent Quartz. Removed accents aren't visible on a cat. Accent genes are applied using quartzes, a sub-type of metamorphics. See Category:Accent Genes for a list of all accent genes.
Removed Genes
Genes that were implemented into the initial version of the demo, but made obsolete by the introduction of White Coverage, or simply replaced with a similar gene. These genes will not be available in the final version of the game. Additionally, all undercoat genes were scrapped with the introduction of the dynamic undercoat mechanic.
White Coverage

White coverage is the varying degrees of white spotting a cat has. This ranges from none, to low, to medium, to high, and full. White coverage is layered above all genes.
